Just a short boat ride from Stone Town, Changuu Island is a hidden gem that's not to be missed. As we approached, I was struck by the island's pristine white beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The island's history is fascinating – it was originally intended as a prison but never actually used as one. Instead, it became a quarantine station for yellow fever cases. Today, it's a peaceful paradise that's home to giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 150 years old! We had the chance to feed these gentle giants, which was an unforgettable experience. The island also boasts the ruins of the old prison building, which you can explore. We climbed to the top for breathtaking views of Stone Town and the Indian Ocean. The snorkeling here is fantastic, with colorful coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. We spent hours relaxing on the beach, swimming in the warm waters, and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. It's hard to believe this serene spot was once intended for such a grim purpose. Changuu Island is truly a perfect day trip destination, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and relaxation.
