Gjirokastra Castle, Gjirokaster

Perched atop a hill overlooking the historic city of Gjirokastra, this imposing fortress is a testament to Albania's rich history. As I approached, the castle's massive stone walls and strategic position immediately impressed me. The panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains are breathtaking. Inside, I explored a fascinating mix of structures from different eras, including Ottoman houses, a former prison, and military installations from World War II. The castle's museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, weapons, and traditional costumes. I was particularly intrigued by the American spy plane on display, a relic from Cold War tensions. The castle's layout is a maze of corridors, chambers, and underground tunnels, each with its own story to tell. Despite some areas being in need of restoration, the overall atmosphere is captivating. The cool, damp air within the thick walls provided a welcome respite from the summer heat. As the sun began to set, the castle took on an even more magical quality, its silhouette dominating the skyline. Gjirokastra Castle is not just a historical site, but a living museum that offers a unique glimpse into Albania's complex past.
