Herculaneum Archaeological Park (Parco Archeologico di Ercolano), Campania

Stepping into Herculaneum Archaeological Park is like traveling back in time to 79 AD. This ancient Roman town, buried by the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii, offers a remarkably well-preserved glimpse into daily life nearly 2,000 years ago. As I wandered through the site, I was struck by the intricate mosaics and vibrant frescoes that still adorn many of the buildings. The two-story houses with their intact wooden beams are particularly impressive, a rare sight in archaeological sites. The ancient shoreline, now about 400 meters inland, reminds visitors of how the coastline has changed over millennia. Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried in hot mud, which preserved organic materials like food, fabric, and wooden objects. In the boat houses near the ancient beach, I saw the haunting remains of residents who sought shelter from the eruption. The site is more compact than Pompeii, making it easier to explore in a few hours, and the smaller crowds allow for a more intimate experience. As I left, I felt a profound connection to the past and a deep appreciation for the ongoing work to uncover and preserve this extraordinary slice of history.
