Stepping into the Córdoba Synagogue is like traveling back in time to 14th-century Spain. This small yet captivating structure is one of only three original Spanish synagogues that survived the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. As I entered, I was immediately struck by the intricate Mudéjar-style stucco work adorning the walls. The Hebrew inscriptions and delicate floral patterns are a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the era. The prayer hall, though compact, feels surprisingly spacious thanks to its high ceiling and large windows that flood the room with natural light. I was fascinated by the women's gallery, a separate area where female worshippers would observe services. The synagogue's location in the heart of Córdoba's old Jewish quarter adds to its historical significance. Despite its turbulent past, including periods as a hospital and a chapel, the building has been beautifully restored. Today, it stands as a poignant reminder of the rich Jewish heritage in medieval Spain. As I left, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the resilience of this architectural gem, which has endured for over 700 years.
