St. Lawrence Fortress (Fort Lovrijenac), Dalmatia

Perched atop a 37-meter-high cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, St. Lawrence Fortress, also known as Fort Lovrijenac, is a breathtaking sight to behold. As I approached the fortress, I was struck by its imposing triangular shape and thick stone walls, which have stood guard over Dubrovnik for centuries. The climb up the steep steps to the entrance is well worth the effort, as it offers stunning panoramic views of the Old Town and the crystal-clear waters below. Inside, the fortress is a maze of corridors, chambers, and terraces, each with its own story to tell. I was fascinated by the inscribed stone slab above the entrance, which reads "Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro" (Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world), a testament to the city's enduring spirit of independence. The fortress played a crucial role in protecting Dubrovnik from Venetian rule and has been the backdrop for numerous historical events and, more recently, scenes from the popular TV series Game of Thrones. As I explored the upper levels, I was mesmerized by the sweeping vistas of the city walls and the island of Lokrum in the distance. The fortress also hosts theatrical performances during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, adding a touch of culture to its rich history.
