Mljet Island, Dalmatia

Mljet Island is a hidden gem in Croatia's Adriatic Sea. As I stepped off the ferry, I was immediately struck by the lush green forests that blanket much of the island. The air is fresh and filled with the scent of pine trees. One of the island's main attractions is the Mljet National Park, which covers nearly a third of the island. Here, I found two stunning saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero, perfect for swimming and kayaking. The crystal-clear waters are incredibly inviting, and I spent hours exploring the shoreline. In the middle of Veliko Jezero sits a small island with a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, which I reached by a short boat ride. The island's villages, like Pomena and Polače, offer a glimpse into traditional Dalmatian life. I enjoyed fresh seafood at local konobas (taverns) and sipped on excellent Croatian wines. The island's secluded beaches and coves are perfect for those seeking tranquility. Hiking and cycling trails crisscross the island, offering spectacular views of the Adriatic. Mljet truly feels like a slice of paradise, far from the crowds of more popular Croatian destinations.
