St. Bavo's Cathedral (Sint-Baafskathedraal), Ghent

Standing majestically in the heart of Ghent, St. Bavo's Cathedral is a breathtaking testament to Gothic architecture. As I approached, I was immediately struck by its imposing facade, adorned with intricate stone carvings and towering spires that seem to touch the sky. Stepping inside, I was enveloped by a sense of awe and tranquility. The cathedral's interior is a masterpiece of religious art and craftsmanship. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece, also known as "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb." This 15th-century polyptych by the Van Eyck brothers is considered one of the most important works of Early Flemish painting. The level of detail in each panel is simply astounding. As I explored further, I marveled at the ornate Baroque high altar, the impressive collection of medieval tombs, and the stunning stained glass windows that bathe the nave in ethereal light. The crypt, with its fascinating mix of Romanesque and Gothic elements, offers a glimpse into the cathedral's long history. Climbing the tower rewarded me with panoramic views of Ghent's historic center. St. Bavo's is not just a place of worship, but a living museum that tells the story of Ghent's rich cultural heritage.
