Walking the York City Walls is like stepping back in time. These ancient fortifications, the longest medieval town walls in England, offer a unique perspective on York's rich history. As I strolled along the narrow walkway, I was struck by the breathtaking views of York Minster and the city's charming rooftops. The walls, dating back to Roman times, have been beautifully preserved and restored over the centuries. I particularly enjoyed exploring the four main gatehouses, or "bars," each with its own character and story. Monk Bar, with its small museum dedicated to Richard III, was a fascinating stop. The walls aren't a continuous circle, but the gaps are easily navigated. It took me about two hours to complete the circuit, including stops to read information boards and take photos. The elevated position provides a wonderful vantage point for observing the city's layout and architecture. It's a must-do activity for any visitor to York, offering both exercise and education. The walls are free to access and open daily, though some sections may close in bad weather. I'd recommend comfortable shoes and allowing plenty of time to soak in the atmosphere of this remarkable historical treasure.
