Royal Enclosure (Royal Palace), Angkor Wat

Stepping into the Royal Enclosure in Gondar, Ethiopia, is like traveling back in time to the 17th century. This sprawling complex of castles and churches was once the seat of Ethiopian emperors, and its grandeur still impresses today. As I wandered through the grounds, I was struck by the unique blend of Indian, Portuguese, and local architectural styles. The centerpiece is undoubtedly Fasilides' Castle, a massive stone fortress with turrets and battlements that wouldn't look out of place in medieval Europe. Inside, I marveled at the intricate frescoes and carved wooden ceilings that have somehow survived the centuries. The nearby Iyasu's Palace, though partially ruined, offers stunning views over the entire compound. What really captivated me was imagining the bustling royal court that once filled these halls. The Bath of Fasilides, a bit removed from the main complex, is particularly atmospheric, especially during the annual Timkat festival when it's filled with water. Despite the passage of time, the Royal Enclosure remains a testament to Ethiopia's rich history and the power of its former emperors.
