As I approached the Terrace of the Elephants in Angkor Thom, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. This impressive 350-meter-long platform was once the stage for grand royal receptions and public ceremonies. The terrace gets its name from the remarkable carvings of elephants that adorn its eastern face. As I walked along, I marveled at the intricate bas-reliefs depicting not only elephants but also garudas and lions. The level of detail in these ancient stone carvings is truly astounding. At the northern end, I found the Terrace of the Leper King, which adds another layer of mystery to this already fascinating site. The central platform offers a commanding view of the royal square, and I could easily imagine the Khmer king addressing his subjects from this vantage point. Despite the passage of time, the terrace remains an awe-inspiring testament to the architectural and artistic prowess of the Angkor civilization. The play of light and shadow on the stone as the sun moves across the sky creates an ever-changing spectacle, making it worth visiting at different times of day.
