Sierra Negra Volcano, Isabela

Standing atop Sierra Negra Volcano, I was awestruck by the sheer magnitude of its massive caldera, stretching an incredible 10 kilometers across. This active shield volcano on Isabela Island in the Galápagos is a testament to the raw power of nature. The hike to the rim was challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As I gazed into the caldera, I could see patches of recent lava flows, a reminder of the volcano's last eruption in 2018. The contrast between the black lava fields and the lush vegetation was striking, creating a unique and otherworldly atmosphere. Walking along the rim, I was treated to panoramic vistas of the island and the sparkling Pacific Ocean beyond. The diverse ecosystem surrounding the volcano is home to various endemic species, including the Galápagos giant tortoise. The experience of visiting Sierra Negra was truly unforgettable, combining the thrill of exploring an active volcano with the beauty of one of the world's most unique natural environments.
