Ggantija Temples, Mellieha

Stepping onto the grounds of the Ggantija Temples, I was immediately struck by the sheer magnitude of these ancient structures. Dating back to 3600-3200 BC, these megalithic temples are older than the pyramids of Egypt, making them some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world. The name "Ggantija" means "giantess" in Maltese, and it's easy to see why – the massive limestone blocks used in construction are truly awe-inspiring. As I wandered through the complex, I marveled at the two main temple structures, each with its own set of apses and a central corridor. The precision of the construction, given the limited tools available at the time, is mind-boggling. I was fascinated by the altar-like structures and the remains of animal bones found on site, hinting at ancient rituals and sacrifices. The site's location on Gozo, with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, adds to its mystical atmosphere. Despite the passage of millennia, you can still see intricate carvings and spirals on some of the stones, silent testaments to the artistic skills of our ancestors. The on-site museum provides valuable context, displaying artifacts found during excavations. As I left, I felt a profound connection to the countless generations who had stood on this sacred ground before me.
