St. Benezet Bridge (Pont d'Avignon), Avignon

Standing majestically over the Rhône River, the St. Benezet Bridge, also known as Pont d'Avignon, is a testament to medieval engineering and a symbol of Avignon's rich history. As I approached the bridge, I was struck by its imposing presence and the way it seemed to float above the water. Only four of the original 22 arches remain, giving the bridge a haunting, unfinished appearance that adds to its charm. The views from the bridge are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of Avignon and the surrounding countryside. I was fascinated by the small chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, perched atop one of the pillars. Inside the bridge, an interactive exhibition brings its history to life, detailing the legend of young Bénézet, who supposedly received divine inspiration to build the bridge. The famous song "Sur le Pont d'Avignon" echoed in my mind as I walked along the structure, imagining the countless people who had crossed it over the centuries. The bridge's connection to the Papal Palace nearby adds to its historical significance. Despite being incomplete, the St. Benezet Bridge remains an enduring icon of Avignon and a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring Provence.
