Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), Corfu

Perched majestically on a rocky peninsula overlooking Corfu Town, the Old Fortress is a testament to the island's rich history. As I approached, the sheer scale of its massive walls left me in awe. The entrance, accessed via a bridge over a seawater moat, immediately transported me back in time. Inside, I explored a labyrinth of tunnels, barracks, and battlements, each offering glimpses into the fortress's strategic importance. The climb to the lighthouse at the highest point was challenging but rewarding, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the town, sea, and distant mountains. I was fascinated by the small church of St. George, built by the British in the 19th century, its neo-classical style a stark contrast to the Venetian architecture. The on-site museum offered valuable insights into the fortress's history, from Venetian rule to British protection. As the sun began to set, the fortress took on a golden hue, creating a magical atmosphere that made me linger, soaking in the sense of history and the beauty of Corfu.
