Imagine cruising through the Pacific Ocean, the salty breeze in your hair, as you approach a group of rocky islands teeming with wildlife. Welcome to the Ballestas Islands, often called the "Poor Man's Galapagos." As our boat neared the islands, I was struck by the sheer number of birds circling above. The cacophony of their calls filled the air, mixing with the bark of sea lions lounging on the rocks. The star of the show was undoubtedly the Humboldt penguins, waddling along the shoreline and diving into the crystal-clear waters. I was amazed to see these creatures so far north of Antarctica. The islands are also home to countless other species, including pelicans, cormorants, and the rare blue-footed booby. As we circled the islands, our guide pointed out the famous "Candelabra" geoglyph, a massive design etched into a hillside, its origins still shrouded in mystery. The two-hour boat tour flew by, and I found myself wishing for more time to observe this incredible ecosystem. It's a testament to the raw beauty and biodiversity of Peru's coastline, and an experience I won't soon forget.
