Stony Point Penguin Colony, Betty's Bay

Nestled along the rugged coastline of Betty's Bay in South Africa, Stony Point Penguin Colony is a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts. As I approached the wooden boardwalk, the distinctive calls of African penguins filled the air. The colony is home to a thriving community of these endangered birds, also known as jackass penguins due to their donkey-like braying. The boardwalk offers an intimate view of the penguins in their natural habitat, allowing visitors to observe their quirky behaviors up close. I was mesmerized by the sight of penguins waddling across the rocky shore, diving into the crashing waves, and tending to their nests. The colony is active year-round, but breeding season from February to August is particularly captivating, with fluffy chicks peeking out from under their parents. Beyond penguins, I spotted cormorants, dassies (rock hyraxes), and even a few whales breaching in the distance. The on-site information center provides fascinating insights into penguin conservation efforts.
