Stepping into the National Palace of Mafra is like entering a time capsule of 18th-century Portuguese grandeur. This colossal Baroque masterpiece, commissioned by King João V, left me in awe from the moment I approached its imposing façade. The sheer scale of the complex is mind-boggling - it's not just a palace, but also a monastery, basilica, and library all rolled into one. As I wandered through its endless corridors and halls, I was struck by the intricate details everywhere - from the ornate frescoes to the gleaming marble statues. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the library, a breathtaking 88-meter-long hall housing over 36,000 leather-bound books. The gentle creaking of the wooden floors and the musty scent of old tomes created an atmosphere of reverence and wonder. Another unforgettable experience was climbing to the rooftop, where I was rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the two massive bell towers housing nearly 100 bells. The palace's six historic organs, when played together, create a unique and powerful sound that still echoes through the basilica.
