Itsukushima Shrine (Itsukushima Jinja), Hiroshima Prefecture

Stepping onto Miyajima Island, I was immediately captivated by the sight of Itsukushima Shrine. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a marvel of Japanese architecture, seemingly floating on water during high tide. The shrine's most iconic feature is its massive orange torii gate, standing proudly in the sea. As I approached, I was struck by the shrine's vermilion color, which contrasts beautifully with the blue waters and green mountains behind it. Walking through the complex, I admired the intricate wooden structures, all built on stilts over the water. The main hall, prayer hall, and noh theater are interconnected by picturesque corridors, creating a harmonious blend with nature. During low tide, I had the unique opportunity to walk up to the great torii gate, feeling the sand beneath my feet where water had been just hours before. The shrine's history, dating back to the 6th century, is palpable in every corner. As the sun began to set, the shrine took on an ethereal glow, reminding me why it's considered one of Japan's three most beautiful views. Itsukushima Shrine offers a truly magical experience, seamlessly blending spirituality, history, and natural beauty.
