Nestled in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, Mt. Koya is a spiritual haven that takes your breath away. As I stepped off the cable car, I was immediately enveloped by a serene atmosphere. The air was crisp and filled with the scent of cedar trees. Kongobuji Temple, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, was a highlight with its stunning rock garden and intricate sliding door paintings. Walking through the Okunoin Cemetery was a humbling experience, with ancient moss-covered tombstones lining the path to Kobo Daishi's mausoleum. The opportunity to stay in a shukubo (temple lodging) was unforgettable. I participated in morning prayers, savored delicious shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and found inner peace in the temple's tranquil gardens. The Garan complex with its vibrant vermilion Konpon Daito pagoda left me in awe of the site's 1,200-year history. Mt. Koya truly offers a unique blend of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and cultural richness that stays with you long after you leave.
