Totumo Mud Volcano (El Totumo), Caribbean Coast

Imagine a giant, natural mud bath that's both bizarre and exhilarating – that's El Totumo for you! This 35-meter-high volcano isn't filled with lava, but with warm, gooey mud that's said to have healing properties. As I climbed the rickety wooden stairs to the top, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. The crater at the summit is surprisingly small, only fitting about 10-15 people at a time. Stepping into the thick, gray mud was an odd sensation – you float effortlessly, unable to touch the bottom. Local attendants offer massages, turning you into a human rotisserie as they spin you around in the mud. After the muddy fun, you descend to a nearby lagoon where local women help scrub you clean. It's a unique, laugh-out-loud experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and with a story to tell. The surrounding area is quite rural, adding to the adventure. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes and some cash for tips. While it may seem touristy, it's a quintessential Colombian experience that's well worth the trip from Cartagena.
