Nestled in the azure waters of Banderas Bay, the Marietas Islands are a hidden gem off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. As our boat approached, I was struck by the islands' rugged beauty - volcanic rock formations jutting out of the sea, teeming with vibrant birdlife. The star attraction is undoubtedly Hidden Beach, a secluded stretch of sand enclosed within a crater-like opening. Accessing it requires a short swim through a cave, but the effort is well worth it. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the islands are perfect for snorkeling, with colorful fish darting among coral reefs. We spotted sea turtles and even a few humpback whales in the distance. The islands are a protected national park, so visitor numbers are limited, preserving their pristine nature. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the islands' history, including their use as a military testing ground. As we circled the islands by boat, we marveled at the natural stone arches and watched blue-footed boobies nesting on the cliffs. The Marietas Islands offer a unique blend of adventure and natural beauty, making for an unforgettable day trip from the mainland.
