Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites, Vancouver Island

Stepping onto the grounds of Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse is like taking a journey through time. These two interconnected national historic sites offer a fascinating glimpse into Canada's coastal defense history and maritime heritage. As I wandered through Fort Rodd Hill, I was struck by the well-preserved gun batteries and underground magazines. The interactive exhibits brought the fort's past to life, allowing me to experience what it was like for soldiers stationed here during World Wars I and II. The highlight was definitely climbing up to the observation post for breathtaking views of the Juan de Fuca Strait. Just a short walk away, the iconic Fisgard Lighthouse stands proudly on a rocky islet. As Canada's first permanent lighthouse on the west coast, it's a true maritime treasure. I loved exploring the keeper's house and learning about the challenging lives of lighthouse keepers. The panoramic views from the top were simply stunning. Throughout the site, friendly staff shared captivating stories and answered all my questions. With beautiful coastal trails, picnic areas, and even the chance to stay overnight in an oTENTik, it's a perfect blend of history, nature, and adventure.
