Stepping into the Medina of Fez is like traveling back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, bustling souks, and ancient buildings that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. As I wandered through the winding streets, I was overwhelmed by the sensory experience – the aroma of spices and leather, the sound of craftsmen at work, and the vibrant colors of traditional textiles. The medina is home to the world's oldest university, Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD. I was mesmerized by the intricate mosaics and carved wooden doors of the numerous madrasas and mosques. The famous tanneries are a must-see, where leather is still processed using medieval techniques. The sight of the colorful dye pits is unforgettable, though the smell can be quite pungent! Throughout the medina, I encountered skilled artisans creating beautiful handicrafts, from intricate metalwork to delicate ceramics. Getting lost in the maze-like streets is part of the charm, and around every corner, I discovered hidden gems – a quiet courtyard, a centuries-old fountain, or a lively market square. The Medina of Fez truly offers an authentic glimpse into Morocco's rich cultural heritage.
