Stepping into Fremantle Prison is like walking through a time capsule of Australia's convict history. The imposing limestone walls and watchtowers immediately transport you back to the 19th century. As I wandered through the cells and corridors, I could almost hear the echoes of past inmates. The guided tours are absolutely fascinating, offering insights into daily prison life and some of the daring escape attempts. I was particularly struck by the solitary confinement cells, which were chillingly small and dark. The prison art on the walls, some dating back over a century, tells silent stories of those who were incarcerated here. One of the highlights was definitely the underground tunnels tour, where we donned hard hats and explored the network of tunnels beneath the prison. It's a bit claustrophobic but utterly thrilling. The gallows are a sobering reminder of the 44 executions that took place here. Despite its grim history, Fremantle Prison is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its cultural significance. It's an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in Australian history or true crime stories.
