Roluos Group (Roluos Temples), Siem Reap

Stepping into the Roluos Group feels like traveling back in time to the dawn of Khmer civilization. These ancient temples, located about 13 km east of Siem Reap, are among the earliest Khmer structures in the region. As I wandered through the complex, I was struck by the raw beauty and historical significance of these 9th-century monuments. The group consists of three main temples: Preah Ko, Bakong, and Lolei. Preah Ko, with its six brick towers, is a testament to early Khmer architecture. The massive Bakong, considered the first temple mountain of the Angkor era, left me in awe with its five-tiered pyramid structure. Lolei, though smaller, charmed me with its intricate carvings and serene atmosphere. What I found particularly fascinating was how these temples showcase the evolution of Khmer architectural styles. The quieter atmosphere compared to the more famous Angkor temples allowed for a more intimate exploration. As I climbed the steep steps of Bakong, the panoramic view of the surrounding countryside was breathtaking. The Roluos Group offers a unique glimpse into the beginnings of the grand Khmer empire, making it an essential visit for anyone interested in Cambodian history and architecture.
