Stepping into the Colombo National Museum is like taking a journey through Sri Lanka's rich history and culture. The imposing white colonial building, with its striking Italian-style architecture, immediately catches the eye. Inside, the museum unfolds across two floors, each filled with fascinating exhibits. The ground floor houses an impressive collection of ancient artifacts, including intricate stone carvings, bronze statues, and pottery from various periods of Sri Lankan history. I was particularly captivated by the royal throne and regalia, which offer a glimpse into the island's regal past. Upstairs, the ethnological galleries showcase the diversity of Sri Lankan culture, with displays of traditional costumes, masks, and musical instruments. The natural history section is a highlight, featuring an enormous skeleton of a blue whale that dominates the room. Throughout the museum, informative placards in English and Sinhala provide context to the exhibits. The peaceful garden surrounding the museum offers a pleasant respite, with its ancient trees and stone sculptures. While the museum could benefit from some modernization, its vast collection and historical significance make it an essential stop for anyone interested in Sri Lankan heritage.
