Krujë Castle (Kalaja e Krujës), Tirana

Perched atop a hill overlooking the charming town of Krujë, this ancient fortress is a testament to Albania's rich history. As I approached, the imposing stone walls and towers immediately transported me back in time. The castle's most famous resident, Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, once defended the country against Ottoman invasions from this very spot. Inside, I explored the fascinating Skanderbeg Museum, housed in a beautiful reconstruction of the castle's keep. The exhibits brought to life the story of this legendary warrior and his epic resistance. The panoramic views from the castle walls were simply breathtaking, stretching across the Adriatic coastline and surrounding mountains. I particularly enjoyed wandering through the old bazaar just outside the castle gates, where local artisans still practice traditional crafts. The scent of grilled meat and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, tempting me to sample some authentic Albanian cuisine. Krujë Castle is more than just a historical site; it's a living piece of Albanian culture and identity that left me with a deep appreciation for this resilient nation.
