Taieri Gorge Railway, Dunedin & The Otago Peninsula

Embarking on the Taieri Gorge Railway was like stepping back in time. As we left Dunedin's historic railway station, the excitement was palpable. The journey through the rugged Taieri Gorge was simply breathtaking. Towering cliffs, deep ravines, and rushing rivers kept us glued to our windows. The vintage carriages added to the charm, with their polished wood interiors and comfortable seats. We crossed numerous viaducts, each offering spectacular views of the gorge below. The train slowed at particularly scenic spots, allowing us to capture perfect photos. Our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating stories about the railway's construction and the area's history. A highlight was the open-air viewing platform, where we felt the crisp mountain air and heard the rhythmic chug of the engine. The four-hour round trip flew by, and we found ourselves wishing it could last longer. A stop at Pukerangi gave us a chance to stretch our legs and admire the remote countryside. The return journey was equally captivating, with the changing light offering new perspectives on the landscape. This scenic rail journey is truly a must-do when visiting Otago.
