Perched atop a hill in Veliko Tarnovo, Tsarevets Fortress is a breathtaking testament to Bulgaria's medieval past. As I walked through the imposing main gate, I was immediately transported back in time. The fortress's massive stone walls, some reaching heights of 12 meters, encircle an area of about 12,000 square meters. Within, I explored the ruins of over 400 houses, 18 churches, and the magnificent Royal Palace. The palace's throne room, though now in ruins, still exudes an air of grandeur. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God, standing proudly at the highest point of the citadel. Its modern frescoes, depicting Bulgaria's turbulent history, are a stark contrast to the ancient stonework. As I climbed to the top of Baldwin's Tower, named after a Latin emperor once imprisoned there, I was rewarded with panoramic views of Veliko Tarnovo and the winding Yantra River. The nightly Sound and Light Show brings the fortress to life, illuminating its walls and towers in a spectacular display. Tsarevets Fortress is not just a tourist attraction; it's a journey through Bulgaria's rich history and a must-see for any visitor to the region.
