Santa Cruz Island (Isla Santa Cruz), Puerto Ayora

Santa Cruz Island is a breathtaking gem in the Galápagos archipelago. As soon as I set foot on its shores, I was captivated by the incredible biodiversity and pristine landscapes. The island's crown jewel is the Charles Darwin Research Station, where I witnessed the ongoing conservation efforts for the iconic Galápagos giant tortoises. Watching these ancient creatures in their natural habitat was truly awe-inspiring. The island's diverse ecosystems range from lush highlands to arid lowlands, each teeming with unique flora and fauna. I hiked through misty forests and across volcanic landscapes, encountering marine iguanas, frigate birds, and blue-footed boobies along the way. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and kayaking, where I swam alongside playful sea lions and colorful tropical fish. The main town, Puerto Ayora, provides a charming base with its waterfront restaurants and artisan shops. What struck me most about Santa Cruz was the delicate balance between human presence and nature conservation, making it a model for sustainable tourism in this ecological paradise.
