Akagera National Park Excursions & Attractions

Nestled in the eastern part of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park stands as a testament to one of Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories. Spanning approximately 1,122 square kilometers, this stunning savannah landscape represents Rwanda's only protected wetland and the last remaining refuge for savannah-adapted species in the country. After facing near devastation following the 1994 genocide, Akagera has undergone a remarkable transformation through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, which began in 2010. This collaboration has resulted in the successful reintroduction of lions in 2015 and rhinos in 2017, restoring Akagera's status as a Big Five destination. Visitors can now encounter elephants, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos, and lions, alongside other wildlife including zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species.

The park offers various safari experiences, from traditional game drives to boat safaris on Lake Ihema, providing unique perspectives of the park's aquatic inhabitants and spectacular waterbirds. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) when wildlife congregates around water sources, making them easier to spot. Akagera's relatively compact size makes it navigable in 2-3 days, offering a perfect complement to Rwanda's more famous gorilla trekking experiences.
