Nevado del Ruiz, Manizales

Standing majestically at 5,321 meters, Nevado del Ruiz is a sight to behold. As I approached this active stratovolcano, I was struck by its imposing presence and the stark beauty of its snow-capped peak. The journey to the volcano is an adventure in itself, winding through the lush Colombian Andes. The landscape transforms dramatically as you ascend, from verdant forests to barren, lunar-like terrain near the summit. The volcano's recent activity has created an eerie, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Steam vents and sulfur deposits add to the sense of raw, natural power. Despite its destructive potential, Nevado del Ruiz is surrounded by incredible biodiversity. I was lucky enough to spot rare Andean condors soaring overhead. The nearby Los Nevados National Natural Park offers excellent hiking trails and stunning views of the volcano. It's a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such a formidable natural force, knowing that it has shaped the surrounding landscape for millennia. The locals have a deep respect for the volcano, which they call "the sleeping lion." It's a reminder of nature's awesome power and beauty.
