As I stepped onto Michaelmas Cay, I was immediately struck by the pristine beauty of this tiny coral island. The crystal-clear turquoise waters surrounding the cay were simply breathtaking. The white sandy beach, barely 3.5 acres in size, felt like a slice of paradise. I was amazed to learn that this small haven is home to over 23 species of seabirds, making it one of the most important nesting sites in the Great Barrier Reef. The air was filled with the calls of terns and noddies, creating a lively atmosphere. Snorkeling in the shallow waters around the cay was an unforgettable experience. The vibrant coral gardens and colorful fish darting about were a feast for the eyes. I even spotted a few green sea turtles gracefully gliding through the water. The cay's location, about 40 kilometers northeast of Cairns, makes it easily accessible for a day trip. Despite its popularity, the island never felt overcrowded, allowing for a serene and intimate connection with nature. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the cay, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this ecological wonder firsthand.
