As I stood atop Vimy Ridge, the weight of history was palpable. This hallowed ground, site of a pivotal World War I battle, is now home to the breathtaking Canadian National Vimy Memorial. The twin white pylons, soaring 30 meters high, are visible for miles around. They're adorned with intricate sculptures, including the haunting figure of "Canada Bereft." Walking the grounds, I was struck by the preserved trenches and tunnels, offering a glimpse into the soldiers' harrowing experiences. The visitor center provides context through artifacts and interactive displays. But it's the memorial itself that leaves the deepest impression. The names of 11,285 Canadian soldiers, missing and presumed dead, are inscribed on its base – a sobering reminder of the human cost of war. The surrounding park, now peaceful and green, was once a battleground. Shell craters and unexploded ordnance are still present, though cordoned off for safety. As I watched the sun set behind the monument, casting long shadows across the ridge, I felt a profound connection to those who fought and fell here over a century ago.
