As I approached Multnomah Falls, the sheer magnitude of this natural wonder took my breath away. Standing at an impressive 611 feet tall, it's the tallest waterfall in Oregon and one of the most visited natural recreation sites in the Pacific Northwest. The falls cascade in two tiers, with the upper fall plummeting 542 feet and the lower fall dropping 69 feet. The iconic Benson Bridge, built in 1914, spans the falls between the two tiers, offering visitors a thrilling vantage point. The misty spray from the falls creates a refreshing microclimate, perfect for the lush ferns and moss that adorn the surrounding cliffs. The well-maintained pathway leading to the viewing area is easily accessible, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. For the more adventurous, a 1.2-mile trail leads to the top of the falls, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge. The on-site lodge, built in 1925, adds a touch of rustic charm and houses a restaurant, gift shop, and interpretive center.
