Sarah Island, Strahan

As I stepped onto Sarah Island, I was immediately transported back in time. This small, rugged island off Tasmania's west coast holds a dark yet fascinating history as one of Australia's harshest penal colonies. The haunting ruins of the settlement are a stark reminder of the brutal conditions endured by convicts in the 19th century. Walking through the island, I was struck by the eerie silence, broken only by the whisper of wind through the trees and the distant crash of waves. The guided tour brought the island's past to life, with vivid stories of escape attempts, harsh punishments, and the daily struggles of both prisoners and guards. The remains of the penitentiary, saw mill, and solitary cells are particularly evocative. Despite its grim history, Sarah Island is set in a breathtakingly beautiful location, surrounded by the pristine waters of Macquarie Harbour. The contrast between the natural beauty and the man-made brutality is striking. As I left the island, I felt a deep appreciation for the resilience of those who lived and worked here, and a renewed gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today.
