Nestled on the shores of Lake Windermere, Wray Castle is a hidden gem in the Lake District. As I approached, I was struck by its imposing Gothic Revival architecture, complete with turrets and battlements that make it look like something out of a fairy tale. Despite its appearance, Wray Castle is relatively young, built in the 19th century as a private home. Inside, I was surprised to find mostly empty rooms, but this actually adds to its charm. It's not your typical stuffy, overfurnished historic house. Instead, it's a playground for the imagination, with interactive exhibits and plenty of space for kids (and adults) to explore and play. The grounds are equally impressive, with beautiful gardens and woodland walks offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding fells. I particularly enjoyed the tree-top trek, which provides a unique perspective of the estate. Don't miss the boathouse by the lake – it's a perfect spot for a picnic. Overall, Wray Castle offers a refreshing and unconventional castle experience that's as much about the present as it is about the past.
