As I approached Cape Cross, the first thing that hit me was the overwhelming smell. But don't let that deter you – it's all part of the incredible experience! This remote spot on Namibia's Skeleton Coast is home to one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies in the world. The sight of thousands of seals sprawled across the rocky shore is truly breathtaking. I was mesmerized by their playful antics in the crashing waves and the cacophony of barks filling the air. The historic Cape Cross Seal Reserve protects these magnificent creatures and provides an excellent viewing platform. Don't miss the replica of the stone cross erected by Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão in 1486, marking Europe's first contact with this area. The stark beauty of the surrounding desert landscape contrasting with the deep blue Atlantic Ocean is simply stunning. While the seals are the main attraction, keep an eye out for jackals and brown hyenas that sometimes prowl the outskirts of the colony. Remember to bring a camera, but be prepared for the strong smell – it's a small price to pay for such an unforgettable wildlife encounter!
