Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste and Northwest

Nestled in the heart of Costa Rica's Guanacaste province, Palo Verde National Park is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. As I wandered through this diverse ecosystem, I was struck by the incredible variety of wildlife that calls this place home. The park's wetlands are a haven for birds, with over 300 species recorded here. I was lucky enough to spot vibrant scarlet macaws and elegant jabiru storks during my visit. The park's namesake, the palo verde tree, dots the landscape with its distinctive green bark. One of the highlights was taking a boat tour along the Tempisque River, where I saw crocodiles basking on the banks and howler monkeys swinging through the trees overhead. The park's dry tropical forest is a stark contrast to the lush wetlands, showcasing Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity. Hiking trails offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Sunset at the marsh was a breathtaking experience, with thousands of birds returning to roost for the night. Palo Verde is a testament to Costa Rica's commitment to conservation, protecting crucial habitats and providing a sanctuary for countless species.
