As I wandered through the rooms, I was struck by the original furnishings and decor, preserved in their authentic state. The grand parlors and bedrooms showcase the opulent lifestyle of the wealthy Aiken family, while the slave quarters provide a sobering reminder of the era's darker aspects. The audio tour is excellent, offering fascinating insights into the family's history and the lives of both free and enslaved residents. I was particularly impressed by the original outbuildings, including the kitchen, stables, and carriage house. The house's "preserved-as-found" condition, with its peeling wallpaper and worn floors, creates an eerie yet captivating atmosphere. Don't miss the stunning art gallery on the third floor, featuring works collected by the Aikens during their European travels. This house museum offers a uniquely immersive experience that brings history to life in a way few other sites can match.
