Kalong Island (Pulau Kalong), Labuan Bajo

Nestled in the heart of Indonesia's Komodo National Park, Kalong Island is a hidden gem that offers a truly unforgettable experience. As our boat approached the island at sunset, I was struck by its lush mangrove forests and rugged coastline. But the real magic began as dusk settled in. Suddenly, the sky came alive with thousands of flying foxes, also known as fruit bats or 'kalongs' in Indonesian. These massive bats, with wingspans up to 1.5 meters, emerged from the mangroves in a spectacular display, filling the air with their haunting calls. It was a mesmerizing sight that left me in awe of nature's wonders. The island itself is uninhabited, adding to its wild and untamed allure. While you can't set foot on Kalong Island, viewing the bat exodus from a boat is an experience not to be missed. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to December, when the skies are clearer. Beyond the bats, the surrounding waters offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. As night fell and we sailed away, the memory of those countless bats silhouetted against the setting sun stayed with me, a testament to the raw beauty of this remarkable corner of the world.
