Özkonak Underground City (Ozkonak Yeralti Sehri), Goreme

Stepping into Özkonak Underground City is like traveling back in time. This ancient marvel, carved into the soft volcanic rock of Cappadocia, is a testament to human ingenuity. As I descended into the cool, dimly lit tunnels, I was struck by the intricate network of passages and rooms that spread out before me. The city goes ten floors deep, though only four are currently open to visitors. What's fascinating is the unique ventilation system - long tunnels that brought fresh air to the deepest levels. I was amazed by the defensive mechanisms, including large stone doors that could be rolled into place to seal off sections of the city. The small holes above these doors were used to attack intruders with spears. As I explored further, I came across living quarters, storage rooms, and even a winery. It's mind-boggling to think that thousands of people once lived here, hidden from the world above. The most poignant moment was seeing the small chapel, a reminder of the faith that sustained the inhabitants during their time underground. Özkonak may be less famous than some other underground cities in the region, but its authenticity and lack of crowds make it a truly special experience.
