Kampong Phluk, Siem Reap

Nestled on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake, Kampong Phluk is a fascinating floating village that offers a glimpse into Cambodia's unique water-based culture. As I approached by boat, I was struck by the sight of wooden houses perched on towering stilts, some reaching up to 10 meters high. The village comes alive during the wet season when the lake swells, transforming the landscape into a watery wonderland. The local fishing community's way of life is truly captivating, with residents navigating their daily routines entirely by boat. I was fortunate to witness children paddling to floating schools and families tending to their floating gardens. The nearby flooded forest is a magical experience, where I glided through submerged treetops in a small wooden canoe. The sunset over Tonle Sap is absolutely breathtaking, painting the sky in vibrant hues and reflecting off the expansive waters. While tourism has touched Kampong Phluk, it still maintains an authentic charm that sets it apart from more commercialized floating villages. This extraordinary place offers a humbling perspective on adaptability and resilience in the face of nature's ever-changing moods.
