Ward Cove, Ketchikan

Nestled in the heart of Alaska's stunning wilderness, Ward Cove is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and rich history. As I stepped off the cruise ship, I was immediately struck by the tranquil waters and lush, evergreen-covered mountains surrounding the cove. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and sea salt. The recently renovated dock area provides a warm welcome, with informative displays about the area's logging and fishing heritage. I was fascinated to learn about the former Ketchikan Pulp Mill that once operated here. The cove's calm waters make it perfect for kayaking, and I spent a delightful afternoon paddling along the shoreline, spotting bald eagles and even a curious seal. The nearby rainforest trails offer excellent hiking opportunities, with boardwalks winding through towering Sitka spruce and western hemlock trees. The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, where I observed bears in their natural habitat and learned about local flora and fauna from knowledgeable guides. Ward Cove truly offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and Alaskan culture, making it an unforgettable stop on any Southeast Alaska journey.
