As I approached the Amman Roman Theater, I was immediately struck by its imposing presence nestled into the side of a hill in downtown Amman. This ancient amphitheater, built during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius in the 2nd century AD, is a true marvel of Roman engineering. The steep stone seating rises dramatically, capable of holding up to 6,000 spectators in its heyday. I climbed to the top tier, my legs burning from the effort, but the panoramic view of the city was worth every step. The acoustics are remarkable – even a whisper from the stage can be heard clearly at the top. It's fascinating to imagine the performances and events that once took place here. The theater is part of a larger complex that includes two small museums. I particularly enjoyed exploring the Jordan Folklore Museum, which showcases traditional Jordanian costumes and crafts. As the sun began to set, the stone took on a warm, golden hue, creating a magical atmosphere. It's incredible that this structure has survived for nearly two millennia, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of Roman architecture in the Middle East.
