Stepping into Rye feels like traveling back in time. This charming medieval town in East Sussex captivates visitors with its cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved Tudor buildings. As I wandered through the narrow lanes, I was struck by the town's rich history, evident in landmarks like the 12th-century Ypres Tower and the imposing St. Mary's Church. The town's most famous street, Mermaid Street, is a picturesque sight with its steep incline and half-timbered houses. I loved exploring the quaint shops and art galleries, each with its own unique character. Rye's literary connections are also fascinating, with Henry James' former home, Lamb House, open to visitors. The town's position near the coast means excellent seafood is abundant, and I enjoyed some of the freshest fish I've ever tasted at the local restaurants. For stunning views, I climbed the church tower, which offered a panoramic vista of the surrounding Romney Marsh and the distant sea. Rye's charm lies in its ability to transport you to another era while still offering modern comforts and a vibrant arts scene.
