As I approached the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The two-story façade, adorned with intricate carvings and towering columns, is a testament to Roman architectural prowess. Built in the 2nd century AD, this library once housed thousands of scrolls and served as a mausoleum for Celsus, the Roman governor of Asia Minor. The four statues at the entrance, representing Wisdom, Knowledge, Intelligence, and Virtue, are simply breathtaking. Although much of the interior has been lost to time, standing in the central hall, I could easily imagine scholars of the past poring over ancient texts. The play of light and shadow on the ruins throughout the day creates an ever-changing atmosphere, making it a photographer's dream. What's truly remarkable is how well-preserved the façade remains after nearly two millennia. The library's strategic location at the end of the main street of Ephesus makes it a focal point of the ancient city. As I explored, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the countless others who have marveled at this architectural wonder over the centuries. The Library of Celsus is not just a ruin; it's a window into the intellectual and cultural life of the Roman Empire.
