Bled Island (Blejski Otok), Bled

Nestled in the heart of Lake Bled, Bled Island is a picturesque gem that seems to have sprung from a fairy tale. As I approached by traditional wooden boat called a pletna, the island's beauty unfolded before my eyes. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the Church of the Assumption, its elegant spire reaching towards the sky. Climbing the famous 99 steps to reach the church was a memorable experience, each step steeped in history and legend. Inside, I was captivated by the ornate baroque interior and the wishing bell. Legend has it that ringing this bell three times while making a wish will make it come true. The island's small size belies its rich offerings – a quaint cafe provides refreshments with stunning lake views, while a small museum offers insights into local history. Walking around the island, I was struck by the tranquility and the breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding Julian Alps and the medieval Bled Castle perched on a cliff. The island's charm lies not just in its sights, but in the serene atmosphere that envelops visitors, making it a truly magical destination.
