As I approached the Church of St. Donatus in Zadar, Croatia, I was immediately struck by its unique circular shape. This 9th-century pre-Romanesque church stands out among the surrounding buildings with its imposing presence. The massive cylindrical structure, built entirely of stone, exudes an air of ancient mystery. As I entered, I was enveloped by a sense of calm and history. The interior, though sparse, is impressive in its simplicity. Huge stone pillars support the domed roof, creating a cavernous space that echoes with every footstep. What fascinated me most was learning that much of the stone used to build this church was repurposed from the nearby Roman forum. You can still see Latin inscriptions on some of the stones, a tangible link to the area's rich past. Although no longer used for religious services, the church now serves as a remarkable venue for musical performances, its exceptional acoustics enhancing every note. Standing in the center, looking up at the soaring dome, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the countless individuals who have stood in this same spot over the centuries, marveling at this architectural wonder.
