Cartagena Cathedral (St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral), Caribbean Coast

Standing majestically in the heart of Cartagena's Old Town, the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria is a true architectural marvel. As I approached, I was immediately struck by its imposing façade, a blend of Baroque and Romanesque styles. The cathedral's history is as fascinating as its appearance, having endured pirate attacks and reconstructions since its inception in the 16th century. Inside, the cool air was a welcome respite from the Caribbean heat. The soaring vaulted ceilings and ornate altars left me in awe. I was particularly captivated by the golden tabernacle, a masterpiece that survived Francis Drake's raid. The play of light through the stained-glass windows created an almost ethereal atmosphere. As I wandered through the nave, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, imagining the countless worshippers who had stood here over the centuries. The cathedral's pipe organ, one of the largest in South America, is truly impressive. Although I didn't hear it play, I could almost imagine its powerful sound filling the space. Don't miss the chance to climb the bell tower for panoramic views of Cartagena. It's a bit of a workout, but the vista of terracotta roofs and the sparkling Caribbean Sea is absolutely worth it.
